Helmets and masks cover, protect and conceal. They serve as head gear, masking fear, while providing defense and identification for the wearer as well as an intimidation factor for one’s opponents. Like many others, I have used imaginary masks and helmets to cover my insecurities, because I felt like an imposter, doubting my abilities to be successful and scared for what the future held. As I wrestled with those thoughts and applied my hand to vastly different mediums with creative artistry, I found new revelation, inspiration and confirmation of my gifts taking shape in steel, metals, alloys and plastics. Creating physical helmets and masks has emboldened me to master and personify the roles I play, and has provided new confidence to step out of my comfort zone.
The helmets are inspired from different chapters of, and interests in my life, reminiscent of my favorite fantasies, video games and cinema. These pieces will not be worn into battle or used on a daily basis for protection. They are rendered as decorations, and personal statements used to demonstrate artistic skill. By their existence, they challenge my previous mindset, verifying my standing as an artist. They bear witness to the truth of my perseverance, accomplishments, mastery and skill as a creative.
