Farmers Market is a 2D hand drawn animation about enjoying a day at the Blacksburg farmers’ market with a friend. It is a meditation on simple pleasures, nostalgia, and the tension between our current reality and the warmly remembered past. I made it as an effort to re-experience events that after the start of the pandemic became distant and alienating. It’s meant as a tribute to sweet, simple rituals that we took for granted. It is also a reminder to have gratitude for fresh air, sunshine, brief, friendly encounters with kind strangers, and community. The pandemic has created so much hardship, but there will always be something to look forward to and to be grateful for.
This project also challenged me artistically and personally. I learned my way around a new medium, experimented with new workflows, and took pride in small victories within a larger battle. When working in hand drawn animation, every singular frame is carefully rendered. Animators chip away at minutes of animation frame by frame, each of which occupies only a fraction of a second. I have a newfound appreciation for every animation and animator. I’m proud of the unfinished work because it’s an artifact born out of experimentation, resilience, and perseverance.
